The cliffs of Papafragas
The cliffs of Papafragas
The striking and strange beach of Papafragas is located in the northeastern part of the enchanting island of Milos, about a five-minute drive from Pollonia and fifteen from Adamas. Immediately following this is Kapros beach.
The whole island is very distinctive, with an almost lunar appearance in which white is the dominant color. Papafragas Beach is a special place, secluded and difficult to reach, but a must-visit in Milos. It would be a great shame to miss it.
In fact, the beach is very small, a narrow strip of sand in which a maximum of about 20 people can fit. The special feature of Papafragas are the caves carved into the volcanic cliff that created three small channels forming natural arches. Because it is so small, it is advisable to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to enjoy it best.
Two of the canals lead right to the tiny beach, and an impassable path with a narrow and difficult staircase carved into the white rocks leads to the sea. The waters are bright blue, crystal clear, and change color depending on sunlight and weather conditions. It is important to always keep wind in mind, because if there is no wind you can spend a wonderful day exploring the surrounding caves. Don’t forget your mask, fins, snorkel and an underwater camera. For the less adventurous, it is possible to relax in the sun and take refreshing swims. On the contrary, if the wind is particularly strong, Papafragas beach becomes dangerous because of the currents that could push you against the rocks or even worse, injure you with the sharp rocks. We therefore advise you to consult the weather conditions the day before to avoid making a wasted trip or, even worse, jeopardizing your safety and thus ruining your vacation.
Of course, the small beach of Papafragas is not equipped. In this magical place there is only untouched wilderness with no intention of bending to man. Bring everything you need with you, from water to food, sunscreen to a hat, and above all wear closed shoes if you decide to tackle the rocky staircase.
For those who prefer a less adventurous option, Papafragas Beach provides an idyllic view from above that is perfect for a memorable photo op. The scenery of the natural pool and the large cave carved into the cliff is truly postcard-perfect.
Not far from Papafragas beach is the oldest archaeological site on Milos, the ancient city of Phylakope, dating from the Neolithic period. Some remains of walls, tombs and buildings can be seen here, although most of the city is now submerged by the sea.
Fun fact: Several centuries ago, during the pirate period, this secret beach was a base where sea marauders hid their treasures and took refuge from the reprisals of the law.
